Key Questions
What is OCEMS and who needs it?
OCEMS (Online Continuous Effluent Monitoring System) measures effluent quality in real time and reports it to the CPCB CEMS server. CPCB guidelines require it for all Grossly Polluting Industries, and Navbharat Water OCEMS installations transmit pH, BOD, COD, TSS and flow data every 60 seconds.
Most industrial plants in India still rely on manual sampling and daily log books, so exceedances surface only in the monthly lab report. OCEMS changes that. CPCB-approved sensors, calibrated monthly, measure pH, BOD, COD, TSS, flow rate and temperature at inlet and outlet, and send the data simultaneously to the CPCB CEMS central server and to your private dashboard. The data cannot be altered or deleted, which is the regulatory intent, so transparency only works in your favour if the plant consistently operates within limits. That is why Navbharat Water pairs OCEMS with automated alerting and remote support. The relevant framework includes the CPCB OCEMS Guidelines and the MoEFCC Notification on Real-Time Effluent Monitoring (2019). Data is retained for 10 years for trend analysis and audits, and a standard five-sensor retrofit on a 500 KLD plant typically takes 2–3 days with no production shutdown.
How does a digital twin help a water treatment plant?
A digital twin is a real-time mathematical model of the plant that runs alongside the physical system on live sensor data. Navbharat Water uses it to predict membrane fouling up to 72 hours in advance, calculate optimal chemical doses and simulate process upsets before they occur.
Because the twin mirrors the plant continuously, it can forecast problems such as membrane fouling or aeration failure 24–72 hours ahead, giving operators time to act preventively rather than reactively. When any parameter approaches a limit, WhatsApp and SMS alerts go simultaneously to your EHS manager and to Navbharat Water remote support, with an alert response SLA of under 15 minutes remotely and 4 hours on site. For BOOT clients, Navbharat Water operators start corrective action without waiting for a client call. The approach scales across sites. In a Gujarat industrial cluster, 12 textile ETP and ZLD plants belonging to a Surat-based group were connected to a single dashboard. Compliance exceedances fell 94% in the first year, and predictive maintenance flagged three pump failures before they happened, saving ₹15 lakh in unplanned downtime. Navbharat Water currently monitors 45 plants live on this platform across India.
Is IoT monitoring of a treatment plant secure and reliable?
Yes. The SCADA and OCEMS network is segmented from corporate IT and the internet, external access uses encrypted VPN with multi-factor authentication, and data travels over TLS 1.3. The platform carries a 99.5% uptime guarantee, and an edge gateway keeps monitoring if connectivity drops.
Navbharat Water follows IEC 62443, the security standard for industrial automation and control systems, aligns with ISO 27001 information security management, and designs to the critical infrastructure protection requirements of the National Cyber Security Policy, 2013. SCADA isolation keeps the process network separate from the office network. Reliability is handled at the plant. The edge gateway processes data locally, stores it during an internet outage and continues operating the OCEMS sensors independently of the cloud. When connectivity returns, all stored data syncs automatically, so the monitoring record has no gaps. The gateway also drives local alarms and operator displays, so plant operations continue uninterrupted. Dashboards are available on the web and on iOS and Android mobile apps, and the platform tracks pH, BOD, COD, TSS, flow, temperature, DO, TDS and ORP across plant inlet and outlet points.
